Surgical Coaching

National malpractice data show that surgery-related claims often rank the highest in terms of both frequency and indemnity payments. A large number of these cases (over 50 percent) allege that “technical performance” by the surgeon or surgical team did not meet the standard of care. However, when brought to trial, many cases are successfully defended, particularly when it is shown to juries that a certain amount of risk is unavoidable when surgery is performed.

But is that really good enough? Are we willing to accept that the current level of “unavoidable” risk is the best we can do? Can we do better?

Recent focus group activity with surgical teams reveal something that insiders have known for years: the surgical environment is rife with distractions. From pagers to cell phones, to side conversations, to repeated interruptions and internal interferences; the ability of a surgeon to stay focused is an ongoing challenge.

The Beyond Par process utilizes a performance model aptly named “Awake At The Wound.” This unique approach is centered in creating a surgeon-directed experience that reduces risk through improved concentration and discipline, and serves as a roadmap to even the worst of distractions in the O.R. The result is a consistent performance.

Just as a professional golfer is able to harness a heightened mental state for optimal performance under pressure (despite what is going on around them), “Awake at the Wound” introduces a similar paradigm to surgeons. The operating room environment is one filled with distractions and other factors that challenge every surgeon’s ability to consistently focus all of their attention on the move they are making during the multitude of high-stakes procedures they perform on a daily basis.
